Just change a couple of carbons, add some hydrogen, or move some double bonds and magically you take a dangerous chemical like BPA and make it safe. Well sometimes yes and sometimes no. When industry realized that BPA in plastics was no longer an option, they devised all sorts of alternatives with the intention of removing the danger.
Many have raised concern about whether these alphabet substitutions are truly safer. In a recent report from University of Missouri researchers, BPS, one of these substitutes was found to be harmful to mouse placentas. The placenta provides nourishment and life support for developing mammals inside their moms. Damage to this structure will lead to baby mouse harm.
One identified dysfunction was described in the paper summary. The BPS chemical which was tested can lower serotonin production in the placenta. Placental serotonin helps the developed baby’s brain to form structures correctly. Lower levels may hinder proper connections and brain growth.
As a functional MD, I do sometimes tire. It seems like toxins keep coming from every direction. At Sanctuary we are fighting with our patients to remove toxins from their bodies. Meanwhile, the industrial revolution keeps throwing newer toxins at us like the BP-alphabet. I have to take a deep breath and ask God for wisdom and strength. I keep raising my voice to warn others of our self-inflicted toxic world.
