Come on… don’t we all already recognize that eating lots of fried food is bad for you? Just in case you don’t, here is one more study to add to your list. Researchers studied the effects of adding canola oil cooked at 325 F in a local eatery’s commercial fryer to the diet of lab mice. The control group of mice received the same diet but with uncooked canola oil. They found that previously induced tumors in the mice on average, doubled in size in mice who received the cooked oil.
The researchers emphasize that they are not saying that the cooked oil causes cancer or other colon diseases, but that it appears to worsen it. They encourage individuals with cancer or inflammatory bowel conditions to avoid such cooked oil.
With the popularity of the ketogenic and paleo diet, I would caution those consuming such higher fat content diets to keep this study in mind. Not all fats are equal and not all methods of cooking are equal. Thoughtful awareness of what goes into your stomach will go a long way in both maintaining and restoring a healthier more abundant life.
