When Life Hands You Lemons: Remain Rooted
By Dr. Potter’s wife, Jennifer
O Word of God Incarnate
O Word of God incarnate, O Wisdom from on high,
O Truth unchanged, unchanging, O Light of our dark sky;
We praise Thee for the radiance that from the hallowed page,
A Lantern to our footsteps, shines on from age to age.
William Walsham How, 1867
The kids and I have been discussing and memorizing Proverbs over for many months now. It has been and continues to be a timely and relevant study. I am continually reminded by my own frailty that we human beings, limited in our understanding and in our physical stamina, do well only when we heed the words of truth passed down through the ages. Indeed, it is the mercy of God that He has imparted His wisdom to us in very practical and vivid images such as those found in the book of Proverbs.
The Wisdom from above is truly relevant precisely because it is not rooted in man and all his fleeting and fickle ideas but because it is rooted in the Creator of all that we know- and even that which we do not.
So, when life seems a little crazy and we need some grounding in eternal principles, indeed grounding in the incarnation of wisdom Himself (Christ), may we look to the only place where true wisdom is explained—the Holy Word of God. Appropriate application of truth (sacred and secular) takes the wisdom rooted in the unchanging One. Stable, rooted wisdom is one of the many comforts available to those called by His name.
