When Life Hands You Lemons….. He Giveth More Grace
He Giveth More Grace as Our Burdens Grow Greater
He giveth more grace as our burdens grow greater,
He sendeth more strength as our labours increase,
To added afflictions he addeth his mercy,
To multiplied trials he multiplies peace.
When we have exhausted our store of endurance,
When our strength has failed ere the day is half-done,
When we reach the end of our hoarded resources
Our Father’s full giving is only begun.
His love has no limits, his grace has no measure,
His power no boundary known unto men;
For out of his infinite riches in Jesus
He giveth, and giveth, and giveth again
Written by Annie Johnson Flint (1866-1932), this hymn describes the deep abiding truth that has been the testimony of many suffering souls through the ages. According to hymnary.org, Miss Flint lived a life of hardship and inspiration.
Very briefly, Annie was born to loving parents who both died when she was young. She and her sister were adopted by the Flint family. As a young woman, she became a teacher but apparently, she developed debilitating arthritis as a young woman. At the same time, her adoptive parents died leaving her and her sister alone again. Apparently, she spent the rest of her days with an increasingly crippled body, but despite her gnarled knuckles she penned poems and hymns and correspondence of comfort.
When we read these words, we know that Miss Flint lived the reality of suffering. Suffering can embitter a soul, or it can beautify a soul. May God use the suffering in my life (whatever form it may take) to bring His beauty to bear upon myself and others.
