Why we address spiritual health care Sanctuary? Session 2
The contemporary world separates the person into physical versus spiritual compartments. Different “specialists” then fill roles in the different areas without much overlapping interaction or consideration.
While we need some experts in different areas, this compartmentalization ultimately fails as it does not fit with reality. We are physical AND spiritual beings as the Bible lays out. Drawing artificial lines creates more problems than it solves.
The Bible describes us as both spiritual and physical. We were originally formed from the dust of the earth and life was breathed into us. The remainder of the Bible addresses both spiritual and physical health. At times it describes God’s physical healing of man. At other times, it addresses forgiveness of sins and restoration of relationships. Many times, these are intertwined.
In medical practice, we see the interplay of spiritual, emotional, and physical on a daily basis. Often stress in a patient’s life manifests as physical symptoms or at least may exacerbate a physical condition already present. Likewise, physical illness affects patients’ emotions and presses in on their spiritual life.
Science regulars uncovers new connections between the emotional and physical realms of our health. Then we can see how these individual realms can affect relationships in our family and communities.
While most of our office visits focus on the physical or tangible biological aspects of your health, this series will hopefully serve to point you back to God’s working in your life. We are not trying to replace your church, but to support your spiritual life.
