As a functional MD, I keep my eyes out for articles which can benefit my patients. Yes, I have a bias going into reading for articles. Normally I’m not in the favor of benefiting rats, as I really don’t like them that much.
In this case feeding blueberries to a bunch of lab rats, provided some insight into potential benefits of this wonderful little berry. In the study researchers compared whether or not blueberries fed to rats who had previously been fed a high-fat diet might find benefits from the blueberries. They discovered that the blueberries could restore the length of intestinal villi, the little finger projections which helps absorb food. The lab rats also had less insulin resistance which had been induced by the high-fat diet after eating a supplier blueberries
The next question I have is whether they fed them little blueberries or big blueberries? Why does this matter? The difference lies in the smaller blueberries actually have more antioxidants benefit. When we eat the big ones we get less of the skins where the good chemicals are found….
So the next time a rat comes into my office for an appointment, if they are on a high-fat diet, I will prescribe blueberries for them. And what all my patients to live a healthier more Abundant Life even if they are a rat. But of course all my patients are wonderful creations of God, so I don’t have to worry about treating any rats.
