This consumer reports article reveals a dark side in supplements, contamination. Our whole world seems caught up in toxins. Why would we be surprised that our protein powders might have some metals or other toxins?
These protein powders originate from plant or animal sources living in those same toxins. They will pick up some toxins and pass them on.
Should we stop these powders and just eat food like the article author encourages? Well, not so fast. Their estimate of how much protein is enough for a person is debatable. Others scientists would argue for higher amounts per body weight especially in intense exercise training. They also conveniently neglect to mention how some of their natural protein sources may themselves be contaminated.
What is the takeaway from all this? Research your protein powder even if you trust a brand. Talk with your doctor about how much protein is right for you. Listen to your body’s response to whatever you try. Just the basic principles that a functional MD like myself advises patient wanting to live a healthier, more abundant life.
