Milk: The Controversy
Milk can be confusing with little ones. God’s perfect food is the baby’s mother’s milk. Designed with the right nutrients and even more important some of mom’s antibodies to help baby from day one. When to stop nursing is a deeply individual choice that no one should make for you. Many other societies nurse their babies for way longer than we do in America. Some babies wean early on their own. Some mommy’s grow weary of being that attached all the time and do not prefer to nurse long. There is no right or wrong answer for you or for baby. Here at Sanctuary we recommend nursing at least 6 months to optimize baby’s health but we will work with you if you have any questions during this time.
Many people find nursing a very satisfying enjoyable bonding activity. But there are many reasons switching to formula can be the right decision for some mothers. That can be a hard decision to make. Next, though, if you do formula feed, when do you stop? Recommendations are to change out formula for whole cow’s milk at the age of one. There was a thought awhile back about not doing whole milk but more recent studies show the growing child needs that fat and should be given whole milk at least until they are two. There are some people that believe we should all be drinking whole milk even as adults, but I digress.
Regardless, at Sanctuary we are not here to pass judgement. We are here to work through every step of this wonderful journey of parenting.
