The Practices of Wisdom
In a world which values expediency, we like the easy fixes. We look for the simple 3 step guide to everything. We want fast food and fast results.
This selection from Proverbs 4:20-27 gets in the way of finding 3 steps to wisdom. We are told to:
- Be attentive
- Incline your ear
- Keep them in your heart
- Keep your heart with all vigilance
- Put way crooked speech and devious talk
- Set your eyes forward
- Ponder the path
- Do not swerve
- Turn your foot away from evil.
Depending on how you divide or combine these, you definitely get more than 3. You also get ongoing actions that are not “one-and-dones”.
Wisdom requires ongoing attentiveness, ongoing inclining your ear, and ongoing…..so on. These are daily practices of putting one foot in front of the other over and over. Reaching the goal requires repeated steps in the right direction. Even one misstep could miss the mark.
Start today with a step in the right direction and repeat it tomorrow. Don’t grow weary. Life, springs of life, healing, and more await you.
