I recently commented on a study linking common childhood viruses (Human Herpes Virus 6 and 7) to Alzheimers disease. In that longer article I mentioned that the medical world is not quite ready to admit that some viral infections may play a part in the development of Alzheimers dementia.
This article is another example of how mainstream medicine needs to wake up and smell the virus. Researchers in the Universities of Manchester and Edinburgh reviewed a Taiwan study and found a link between Herpes Virus 1 and Alzheimers. In the study of patients over 50 years old who developed a severe case of Herpes Type 1 , they had a 2 1/2 increased risk of Alzheimers in the following years. Those who received aggressive anti-viral therapy reduced that risk by 10-fold.
So, in short we have a potential trigger and a potential therapy. Not a bad punch line for a research study. Still so many in the conventional medical world still deny the links between infections and Alzheimers disease.
However…..Before you go out testing and/or treating herpes, not everyone who had Herpes later developed dementia and not everyone who was treated avoided it. There are many causes to Alzheimers dementia and many potential therapies Find out from a functional MD whether you have metal toxicity, vitamin deficiencies, or chronic infections putting you or a loved one at risk.
