Psalm 123
“To you I lift up my eyes,
O you who are enthroned in the heavens!
Behold, as the eyes of servants
look to the hand of their master,
as the eyes of a maidservant
to the hand of her mistress,
so our eyes look to the Lord our God,
till he has mercy upon us.
Have mercy upon us, O Lord, have mercy upon us,
for we have had more than enough of contempt.
Our soul has had more than enough
of the scorn of those who are at ease,
of the contempt of the proud.”
(ESV)
This short prayer communicates volumes in its simple but poignant imagery. Taking the time to ponder the images given in this heartfelt prayer helps me to gain a proper attitude in the face of suffering. This proper attitude springs from a proper gaze. When my gaze is firmly upon my Master’s mighty and providential hand, I find rest from my anxious toil. Because my Master has it all worked out and because His resources are unlimited, I can desist from my fruitless endeavors to solve my own problem. His mercy is sure. I can rest and wait for the lemons of life to be taken care of by Master. I just need to gaze in the right direction while I wait for His mercy to prevail.
