Moldy Home Insurance

While the adverse health effects of mold are under-recognized by the general public, the situation with insurance coverage for mold remediation might be even less so. As houses become more and more energy efficient, the risk for humidity or other water sources to build up and encourage mold growth in a house increases. Once someone realizes mold in their homes is making them sick, they may expect insurance to take care of the house damage. Most of the time, they will be sadly disappointed when the insurance company denies their claim.

If you are facing mold remediation costs rising in the thousands of dollars and cannot do the repairs yourself, take some time to read this article. This quick and simple read will provide some insights on the following:

• When to submit claims to insurance for mold repairs
• How to submit claims
• What to expect after submitting the claim
A further summary provides these tidbits:
• Insurance companies have usually written mold out of their policies
o Unless related some other damage
• Document very well if you are submitting to the company and know their required steps
• If you believe you have a legitimate claim but have been denied, consider an appeal

Why wouldn’t the insurance company pay for damage? You have paid for years in case something bad happened and now something bad happened. Years ago, a large mold related lawsuit sent the insurance industry into a tailspin causing them to rewrite mold out of their policies. They have mad their policies very clear that mold remediation is rarely covered.

I hope this information helps you overcome mold if it is keeping you from a healthier more abundant life. If you are one of our patients, we can talk more about this during an appointment.
